Lithophanes are 3 dimensional objects *that when light shines through them look like photographs. They rely on differing thickness of the material to allow transmission of different amounts of light to create all the different shades found in an image. The ability to create very minute difference in thickness allow for greater resolution. Although computer carved or 3D printed items can be made with very high resolution, lithophanes have been made since the 1800’s. they were initially produced by fine artisans molding porcelain and using candles to produce the light that was transmitted through them.
